5.0 out of 5 starsSuperior performance, noise levels, and power usage for the price!August 7, 2010

In adhering to my beliefs that a review should be indicative of the particular SKU being reviewed, I'll begin by stating that I can't relate this Visiontek product to any other vendor's HD5770...this rating and review applies solely to my experience with the Visiontek HD5770 (though I'll reference the XBOX 360 so folks looking for a solid, cheap upgrade from console hardware know what to expect).1) Performance (1st and foremost): excellent (approximately three times the graphical power of the XBOX 360 I updgraded from (per passmark's benchmarks, and my own observations). With a sufficient CPU, you'll be able to run virtually all current-generation games at 1080P/60fps (with no anti-aliasing (which you really don't need at 1080p native (in fact, it works to dull the image))).All with maxed settings (no AA):--"Resident Evil 5" Benchmark (Variable), 1080p; 70.1fps average (GPU limited) (720p/30fps XBOX 360)--"Street Fighter 4" Benchmark, 1080p: 125.65 fps average (GPU limited) (720p(?)/60fps XBOX 360)--"Mirror's Edge:" 1080p/60fps: 80-85% maximum load (720p/30fps XBOX 360) (and let me tell you that this game is simply *incredible* at 1080p/60fps, especially five feet from a 50" 1080p screen...it simply can't be compared with the console versions...bring on the 3D conversion, EA!!!!)--"Dead Space:" 1080p/60fps: 40-50% maximum load (720p/30fps XBOX 360)--"Far Cry2:" 1080p; at 100% maximum load, 35-75 fps depending on environment (720p/30fps and lower, XBOX 360) (also note far superior PC visual quality) (often CPU limited, even with newer quad)--"Bioshock," "Bioshock 2:" 1080p/60 fps; 50-75% maximum load (both 720p/30 fps XBOX 360)--"Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare:" 1080p/60fps; 50-75% maximum load (600p/60fps XBOX 360) (+ visibly better PC effects and overall quality)All 3rd of 4th highest settings (both unplayable at highest at 1080p...the two most demanding games of which I'm currently aware):--"Crysis: Warhead:" 1080p; @ 100% maximum load, 25-45 fps, external enviroment (presumably not playable on an XBOX 360's hardware (without having made serious cuts to the beauty of the game)).--"Metro 2033:" 1080p; @ 100% maximum load, 25-60+ fps depending on environment (720p (I believe...possibly lower), 30fps and lower, XBOX 360)So, I think this clarifies what you can expect from this card; again, just about any game developed prior to 2010 (and most thereafter) will run at 1080p/60fps (in conjunction with an i3 overclocked to 4.0 GHz, that is) with very few, if any, framerate drops, with all settings maxed (no AA...who needs it?). Good stuff!2) Noise: at rest, the fan is inaudible, for all intents and purposes. At load (75-85% speed), it can only be heard from less than three feet, in my perception. Again, good stuff.3) Heat: at rest, I find an average of 50C when set to 850MHz (the card normally rests at 157MHz, but for some reason rests at 850MHz when running dual 1080p monitors; when watching a Blu-Ray (400 MHz (even while two monitors are still active)), the temperature drops to approximately 45C. At full load at 850 MHz, the card has never gone above 73C. Extremely low...and ample room for overclocking.4) Power: at rest, about 18W. At load, approximately 108W...far lower than Nvidia's similar offerings, and not far off from the XBOX 360 itself (due mainly to the 40nm process used with this card).5) Build quality: while this particular vendor uses the non-standard "egg" fan (as opposed to the design that vents the heat directly out of the rear of the case), there is no vibration whatsoever caused by the fan (indicating proper balancing), and all connectors and power jacks are very secure and stable. So, the long and the short is that for $165, you can get three times the power of current-generation consoles (ten or more times the power of the Wii, of course) (provided your CPU won't limit the games), and truly run this generation's games in "Full" HD, with the added impact of 60fps (over the typical 30 provided by consoles). For under $200, you simply can't beat this card, and as far as I can tell, Visiontek's model is as good as any other.
