As I get ready for the release of Diablo III, it seems that it's time for me to upgrade the system that I'll wind up playing the game on as the video card that I used to use (the one that came with the system, an older HP Pavilion Elite HPE-210F Quad Core Desktop w/1TB HDD, 8GB RAM & Blu-Ray, HP Pavilion Elite HPE-210F Desktop PC (Black), with pre-installed ATI Radeon HD5450, something similar to this: Asus ATI Radeon HD5450 Silence - 1 GB DDR3 VGA/DVI/HDMI Low Profile PCI-Express Video Card EAH5450 SILENT/DI/1GD3) was growing a little old and slow and was not one that was listed as delivering decent performance for Diablo III.Unfortunately for me, my upgrade also wound up having to include an OCZ Modular Power supply OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Modular High Performance Power Supply compatible with Intel Sandy Bridge Core i3 i5 i7 and AMD Phenom as the one that was built into the HPE-210F was not up to snuff either. In looking for a graphics card that would fit my needs/demands, one of the considerations that I had is that the PC that will become, at least temporarily, my gaming PC is also currently my Home Theatre PC (HTPC), with an installed Ceton InfiniTV card Ceton InfiniTV 4 Digital Cable Quad-tuner Card PCIe. Additionally one of the slots in the back of this PC is also "wasted" for the built-in Wi-Fi network, so unless I wanted to clean things up a bit and remove that unneeded (for me, since I have this PC hardwired into the Ethernet that is available in my space) card, I could wind up with issues finding a video card that would fit within just a single slot worth of space. In fact, looking through the various options seemed to show that finding a card that would fit a single slot could be nearly impossible as so many of the current generation of video cards are cards that will use up two slots of space so that all of the connectors would be accessible and so that there's plenty of room for the built in fan and heat sink on the video cards. The PowerColor AX6850 very nicely fits within one slot, though it must be noted that the card is relatively long and that could cause some people issues getting the card to fit into their cases if their systems are cramped in the other direction. One thing that I should note is that the PowerColor AX6850 has a PCIE power connector where it should be plugged into the power supply in your PC. Thankfully the OCZ modular power supply that I had purchased came with the required cables and was easy to plug the video card into, though others might need an adapter/converter to tap into when adding the card to their own systems.Installation of this video card was fairly easy. Connect the power connector up to the power supply, slide the card into the appropriate slot in the case (and in the motherboard) and then fire the system up. Since I had already put in the new power supply and tested it, the only thing left to do was install the drivers for the new video card and then update them to the latest official release. Relatively simple, though working with the default graphics mode while the driver was being installed reminded me of just how ugly the pc graphics experience used to be. Bleh. There are other products that use the same chipset available at lower price points, but those cards don't fit the form factor that I was looking for, hence the relative premium pricing that could be asked for and paid for this particular brand/model card. All things considered, I'd buy another of these cards again in the future if necessary and have bought and used PowerColor brand video cards in the past. They've worked as advertised and delivered decent performance for the prices that were paid, hence no real fear with buying this card now. I look forward to gaming away with this new card in the coming weeks and doing so with an experience that leaves me satisfied that I'm not playing on a system that just meets the minimum specifications/requirements.Windows Experience rating went from showing my old video card as the major bottleneck in my system, with a rating in the lower 5 range (Windows 7 ratings) to showing the hard drives that I'm using as the only remaining bottleneck -- the video system is now showing ratings in the upper 7 range.Bring on the fires of Diablo III: Collector's Edition. I look forward to it!
