5.0 out of 5 starsGREAT CARD FOR THE PRICE, NOISE NOT A PROBLEMJanuary 14, 2012

I consider this is a great video card for the price I paid (20$, AMZ). I understand they can still be bought at this price, via rebates.Bought two of them, for new builds for which I still don't have all the components.Tested them yesteraday on two PCs. One with an Nvidia NForce 570 SLI chipset / Samsung monitor, and the other an AMD 770 chipset / LG monitor. Both have Windows XP Pro.Had to remove the video card that was installed, first, before I could do the tests. And put the new card in its place. It would not work on the second PCI Express x16 slot - guess this is normal. One thing, when I tried to use the VGA (blue) connector in the LG monitor, the computer started, and seemed to go on loading Windows. It showed the first screens right after the BIOS POST, then the Windows logo, but after that there was no image. It worked fine afterwards, when I used the DVI input. The other monitor only has DVI.I do not play video games, nor do video editing. So I cannot speak for these types of applications. The cards did a fine job for watching videos and other things I do. There are some reviews that talk about decent capabilities for gaming. On the very first try on the Nvidia computer all the temperatures reported by the hardware monitor increased by 10 deg. C, or even more. You could feel the heat in the case. Don't know why. Turned it off to take out the card. Tested the other card, which worked ok. Reinserted the first card again, and this time the temperatures were back to normal, or even a little lower - the fan seems to move air like crazy. At the same time it seems to be a problem for many people that use these cards, because of the noise level - you can really hear the air flowing.I would like to talk about this apparent weakness, that can be dealt with without too much trouble. I lifted the fan from the heatsink, to get some info about it. It is a two pin, nine blade, Power Logic PLA08015S12HH (Power Logic/80x15mm/Sleeve bearing/12 volt/DoubleHigh speed), that is also used in some GTX 580 video cards that cost about 500$ - saw one that has three of them, although they are 4 pin, eleven blades. So they must not be all that bad, just loud. You can reduce the noise by turning down the fan speed. I understand that this has to be done via hardware since they only have two pins - you need at least three pins for fan control via the motherboard. I had a couple of fan controllers that have a knob for continuous speed control, which install as an expansion slot cover at the back of the case, lying around. They had come with fans that were controlled by the motherboard, and hence were not needed.I connected one controller end to a 4 pin mollex connector on the power supply, and the other end to the two pin connector on the video card fan - this was the only complication because the controller connector is 3 pin and the card fan connector is two pin. I solved it by improvising, but you can buy an adapter that does this, for 2 $, at Amazon. I did this test without installing the card, just left it lying on top of the desk (the cables in the controller are quite long). The arrangement worked very well. By turning the knob you could lower the fan speed to the point that you couldn't hear it at all. Turning it all the way up just brought it back to its normal noisy state. For what I saw in a review these fans spin from 1100 to 4000 RPM, which I think is quite a range. This I could feel when rotating the knob.So you could have a fairly decent video card, for a price that is near ridiculous, plus a little bit of money and work to control its fan via a hardware fan controller - without loosing access to the wide range of speeds this fan can do. This arrangemente should work just fine. Looking forward to my new buids.Hope somebody finds this useful.
