After using GeForce 8800gtx for 5 years, I upgraded to the GeForce GTX 480 two years ago. Today, the GTX 480, though rendered slightly outdated by newer models, is still one of the top benchmark performers. At the current street price that is half of its original price two years ago, this card is simply a steal. Of course, a card like this is mainly for gamers. If you are not into high-performance gaming, there are cheaper video cards still.The GeForce GTX 480 is 10.5 inches in length and takes up two card slots, so make sure you have a full size computer case, not one of those slim case, mini case, etc. It requires a minimum of a 600 Watt power supply. Though not necesary, it needs as fast a CPU as you can get in order to go full speed. Also, a card with this much power can get really hot, so make sure your PC cooling is well taken care of. All these requirements drive home the notion that this card is mainly for PC enthusiasts.My PC has an Intel Core i5 Quad-Core 2.66GHz CPU, and together with the GTX 480, I am able to get good frame rates (at least 30fps) in the most resource-demanding DirectX 11 games such as Crysis 2 and Metro 2033 at fullest details and the highest resolution my monitor can produce (1680x1050, 1600x1200). Note that 30 fps minimum is satisfactory to some but may not be so to others. If you have monitors that can go to even higher resolutions, or if you want to be more "future-proof", or if you simply want higher frame rates, or if you want 3D gaming, then consider getting a more recent and powerful card model like the GTX 580 or 680.While I'm happy that the GTX 480 is cooler than my old 8800gtx, it is still pretty hot. Tom's Hardware's benchmark shows the GTX 480 could get up to 97�C at full load, which may cause concern to some users as nVidia's specs recommend a max temperature of 105�C. On my PC, its idle temperature is about 50-60�C. While fully stressed running Crysis 2 at max details, it goes to mid 80s �C. I have never seen it hit 90. Of course, everyone's cooling method and ambient environment are different, so you may have more or less success in cooling down its temperature. I use a front cooling fan with dust filters that minimize dust entering the PC, plus exhaust fans at the top and the back. That is pretty much the bare minimum cooling setup for a gaming rig. I don't use water cooling. But if your environment is less forgiving, consider additional cooling. Monitoring your card's temperature regularly with a utility like GPU-Z is recommended. EGA's website provides the "EVGA Precision" utility that lets you configure GPU fan settings as well.GTX 480 is HDCP-compliant, as are the newer 580 and 680. Having HDCP compliance enables you to play video content that is protected with HDCP, such as Blu-ray discs and many HD videos sold on iTunes. Note that your monitor, not just your video card, also needs to be HDCP-compliant as well for you to play such content.nVidia made a downloadable nTune utility that integrates temperature-monitoring into your nVidia control panel screen, but nTune only works for XP and Vista, and it has never been updated for Windows 7. Use a third-party utility like GPU-Z instead.Anyone who has used an nVidia video card knows that nVidia makes frequent driver updates that always keep up with the latest games, and the updates often give significant boost to game performances.The GTX 480 comes in two model numbers: 015-P3-1480-KR and 015-P3-1480-AR. The difference between -KR and -AR is the former comes with a 3-year warranty while the latter comes with limited lifetime warranty, and thus cost more. Hence, if you pay for -KR, it should cost LESS than what you would pay for -AR, even though the two models are otherwise identical. I believe you may upgrade the 3-year warranty from your -KR model to limited lifetime with additional cost. To actually get the warranty, you have to sign up for an account at Evga.com, fill out a form, and register your video card.The card supports multiple monitors. It has two DVI ports and a miniHDMI port. It comes with a miniHDMI-to-HDMI cable, which I often use to send video output to my HDTV and get fine results.*** 6/19/12 EDIT: I added a slight but potentially crucial information below about the card's HDMI audio output: ***The card's HDMI output is also able to send HD audio to an external sound system, since GTX 480 has a built-in HD audio processor. But please note that GTX 480 is only able to send out PCM multi-channel audio. It is not able to send out DTS-HD Master Audio bitstream or Dolby TrueHD bitstream. Cards that support DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD bitstreaming include GTX 560, 560Ti, 550Ti, 460, etc., and 480 is not one of them. Go to [..] and look under "GeForce graphics processors" to find this piece of well-hidden caveat. This is not a big issue in most cases, as software players like PowerDVD can decode bitstream into PCM multi-channel audio. But it could be vexing if you expect the GTX 480 to pass through HD audio bitsteam and wonder why your audio receiver isn't getting it. You just need to set your software player to output PCM audio instead of bitstream audio.
